When you participate in strenuous activities or overexert when the heat index is 91 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, your body can be less efficient at cooling itself, says Jessica Mazzucco, certified personal trainer and founder ofThe Glute Recruit.

Dr. Lorne Wiseblatt, M.D., a family doctor based in Montreal, says using a handheld fan may help displace said hot air and replace it with cooler air, thus reducing body temperature and helping you cool off. People who experience lung issues and are outside in humid weather might find these fans can also help with breathlessness, according to Dr. Stacy Chimento, M.D., a board-certified Miami dermatologist at Riverchase Dermatology.

According to Dr. Wiseblatt, misting may help cool the body even more through the process of evaporation, which is the body’s most effective mechanism for dissipating excess heat. “When our skin becomes wet, such as during sweating, energy is used to convert water into vapor,” he says. “The body will use its own heat energy for this process, thus reducing core temperature. Misting will help with this process by giving your skin a liquid to vaporize. Plus, your body needs to produce less sweat, reducing your risk of dehydration.”

The dangers of spending too long outside on a hot day without cooling can be scary, as Dr. Wiseblatt explains. On the milder end of the spectrum, overheating can lead to muscle cramps and light-headedness; in more extreme cases, heatstroke could occur.

Of course, there are less scientific incentives to staying cool.“I just think it’s neat to carry a misting fan because then you become known as the cool fan person in the friend group, and everyone appreciates that person,” Dr. Wiseblatt says.
