NCLR WELCOMEOn behalf of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and its Board of Directors, welcome to the 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards®. Tonight we recognize the best and brightest Hispanic artists for their limitless contributions to the American entertainment industry. This program would not be possible without the support of our visionary partners, sponsors, and friends, especially our Presenting Sponsor and long time partner, PepsiCo. We also want to acknowledge Comcast and NBCUniversal for giving the ALMA Awards a new home and greater opportunity to reach even more viewers with this wonderful program; their commitment has provided the stage for a new generation of Latino role models. We want to give our heartfelt thanks as always to Eva Longoria, our co-host and Executive Producer, for her continued dedication to the ALMA Awards and for ensuring that each year’s show is more spectacular than the last, as well as co-host George Lopez—two of the most captivating entertainers in the nation today.

Since 1995, the NCLR ALMA Awards has honored outstanding Latino artistic achievements in television, film, and music. The show is an integral part of NCLR’s mission to create greater opportunities for Hispanic families in the United States. As a national prime-time television special with a cause, the NCLR ALMA Awards demonstrates how inclusion strengthens the entertainment industry and diversity strengthens our country by promoting fair, accurate, and representative portrayals of Latinos. And as the recent Census results unequivocally demonstrated, creating and fostering those portrayals has never been more important for our community, especially young Latinos. Tonight, they’ll see their favorite stars from English-language film, television, and music be recognized—giving them a new set of positive role models and showing that as young Latinos they too can contribute to the entertainment industry and their country.

This year we introduced an online voting system so that fans could vote for their favorite performers. This interactive component of the ALMA Awards was especially exciting because it invited viewers from across the country to share in the mission of the ALMA Awards and of NCLR. These stars are receiving awards not just because the entertainment industry says they’re important, but because audiences across the country say so, too. We are proud to honor these entertainers whose stories speak to us, and whose work resonates with our voters.

The 2011 ALMA Awards broadcast will commemorate the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates and honors the rich history of the Hispanic community in this country. What better way to celebrate the contributions of Latinos than with the show-stopping performances from some of the top acts in music today, an array of celebrity presenters, and the chance for some of the emerging talents in our community to shine. The ALMA Awards show is the perfect kickoff to National Hispanic Heritage Month, and it promises to be an unforgettable night.

NCLR MISSION AND VISION

OUR MISSION

NCLR—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas—assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families.

Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, DC. NCLR serves all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country and has regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, and San Antonio.

NCLR and the ALMA Awards®

For more than 40 years NCLR has been promoting the advancement of Latino families in this country, creating opportunities and opening doors. In 1995 NCLR created the ALMA Awards as part of its strategy to promote fair, accurate, and balanced portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry. The show was named “ALMA” (American Latino Media Arts and Spanish for “spirit” or “soul”), which represents the determined spirit of the Latino community and reflects the spirit as well as the scope of the awards program. The NCLR ALMA Awards, a television entertainment special with a cause, highlights how inclusion strengthens the entertainment industry and diversity strengthens our country—an integral part of NCLR’s mission.

OUR VISION

NCLR has grown and evolved over the course of its history to become the most authoritative voice on Hispanic issues today. NCLR’s founding and evolution parallel the increasing presence and contributions of Latinos in the U.S., now the largest and fastest-growing ethnic minority. Initially a small regional organization focused on one Hispanic subgroup, NCLR now represents all Hispanic communities throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, works with community-based organizations from the Northeast to the Southwest, and conducts both national and state-level advocacy on a range of public policy issues that have the potential to improve outcomes for Latinos.

NCLR’s vision is for Hispanics to reach equality with non-Hispanics in terms of economic empowerment, political empowerment, and social advancement and seeks to improve their lives by enhancing their ability to improve their socioeconomic status. While Hispanics have made advancements in certain areas, prosperity has not reached all segments of the community.

NCLR has identified five major areas in its agenda and uses its experience, relationships, and a strategic roadmap to “move the needle” in these areas.

First, education is clearly the key to achieving the American Dream, and it is essential that positive learning experiences begin in early childhood and continue throughout students’ educational careers. NCLR is working to ensure that the resources required to help Hispanic and immigrant students of all ages are universally available and that Hispanic parents are empowered to become advocates for quality education.

Second, while many Americans enjoy financial security and economic well-being, not all Latinos have fared well in these arenas. NCLR is working to increase Hispanic access to economic mobility tools to reward work, complement workplace supports, and build wealth.

Third, while Latinos are affected by a wide range of risk factors and diseases, nearly every health disparity they experience could be prevented or more effectively managed given timely access to health care. NCLR strives to eliminate the incidence, burden, and impact of health and environmental problems in the Latino community, seeking tangible improvements in Latinos’ access to health coverage and high-quality, culturally competent health care.

Fourth, Latinos hold fewer assets than other Americans, proven by virtually every tangible standard. NCLR works to reduce the wealth gap and increase the level of assets held by the Latino community, including pension coverage, homeownership, retirement security, savings, and access to bank accounts and affordable credit.

Finally, the current U.S. immigration system is in need of comprehensive reform. The entire nation benefits from a fair, equal, and fully inclusive society. NCLR works to advance an affirmative agenda that has a positive impact on immigrant communities and links national and local advocacy efforts. NCLR also supports local communities in addressing the impact of negative state and local policies targeting immigrants, ensures equal access to safety-net services for immigrants, and maximizes naturalization and civic participation of new Americans.

While the challenges that Latinos face are complex, the solutions that NCLR seeks are simple—quality education, access to health care, rewards for hard work, prospects for advancement, and respect for common American values. Through NCLR’s approach of collaborating with its many partners, realization of these goals is a victory not only for NCLR and the Latino community, but for all Americans.

ALMA AWARDS® SELECTION PROCESS

For over 40 years, NCLR has been promoting the advancement

of Latino families in this country, by creating opportunities and

opening doors. The NCLR ALMA (American Latino Media Arts)

Awards presentation is an integral part of that mission as a national

prime-time NBC Television Network entertainment special with a

cause—to show how diversity strengthens our country and how

inclusion strengthens the entertainment industry.

The 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards—which kicks off National Hispanic

Heritage Month—celebrates America’s favorite Latinos in the

entertainment industry, television programs, and films. Nominees

and winners are determined by the NCLR ALMA Awards Production

Leadership Team’s (NCLR ALMA Awards staff, executive producers,

and producers) consideration of U.S. box office rankings, Nielsen

ratings, Billboard chart rankings, the online NCLR ALMA Awards

survey results, and the media and general public popularity

of the television program, movie, music, or individual and/

or the individual’s performance, act, or appearance. Special

Achievement Awards recipients are selected by the NCLR ALMA

Awards Production Leadership Team for exceptional merit or

career achievement. Final awards categories and number of

awards presented on the telecast are determined by the Team in

consultation with network executives.

The 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards is excited to have a new home on NBC. Reprising their roles as ALMA Awards co-hosts, actress, philanthropist, author, and executive producer Eva Longoria and comedian, talk show host, and actor George Lopez are ready to celebrate the ALMA Awards with viewers across America.

Longoria is now in her fifth year of producing the ALMA Awards, and says the show is important “because it is the only network televised award show that celebrates the positive portrayals of Latinos in television, film and music. Each time Latino artists are singled out for their talent, the perception of Latinos changes for the better—and that is the power of media.”

Lopez is no stranger to hosting the ALMA Awards either, and has continually worked to empower the roles of Latinos in mainstream media. Lopez added that he is “thrilled to be co-hosting the ALMA Awards with a great role model and friend.”

This year’s show features a wide array of categories, including film, music, and television roles as well as favorite reality show, drama, and comedy, and voters online have helped determine favorites in each. Additionally, the ALMA Special Achievement Awards this year recognize the talented careers of a writer, documentarian, and director in their unique fields.

The 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards is a fantastic program and celebration that recognizes the hard work, creativity, and contributions that Latinos make not only in American pop culture, but throughout our country’s history.

OUTSTANDING CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

DOCUMENTARIAN Raymond Telles

Raymond Telles receives a 2011 NCLR ALMA Outstanding Career Achievement Award for his drive to share Latino stories and culture with mainstream audiences through his distinguished 30-year career as a documentary filmmaker. His work frequently navigates his personal history and that of Latinos, offering profound insight into how Latino history has shaped the American present.

Telles produced and directed The Storm That Swept Mexico, a documentary that tells the story of the Mexican revolution, incorporating photographs and motion pictures that had never been seen before in the United States. The story is a personal one, as his maternal grandfather and great-grandfather fought against Mexican president Porfirio Diaz in the revolution of 1910. Discussing the film, Telles said, “This was family history to me…and it helps us understand the complicated relationship between Mexico and the United States.”

He co-directed and produced The Fight in The Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers’ Struggle, the first film to cover the full arc of Chavez’s life and the ALMA Award winner for Outstanding Made-for-Television Documentary in 1998, and Race is the Place, an examination of race in America. His work on television includes the PBS Frontline program Children of the Night, which won a DuPont-Columbia Gold Baton Award as well as a number of other honors. For PBS, he directed In Search of Law and Order, a groundbreaking series on juvenile justice that was broadcast nationally in 1999. His independent productions include films for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and ITVS. He is currently at work on The Latino Americans, a documentary series slated to air on PBS in 2012, which will tell the entire history of Latinos in the United States.

In addition to his ALMA Award, Telles holds a series of prestigious honors from a variety of awarding bodies, including three Emmys and two PBS Programming Awards for News and Current Affairs. He has been recognized with the Ohio State Award and a NATAS Community Service Award, and he has received top honors in the San Francisco, American Film and Video Association, Chicago, and New York film festivals, and two CINE Golden Eagles. He has an MFA in film from UCLA and is a member of the Writers Guild of America and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

For his ability to connect his personal story to that of Latinos and the nation as a whole in his career, Telles is a shining example of what Latinos contribute not only to American history, but also to American film. We are honored to present him with the 2011 NCLR ALMA Outstanding Career Achievement Award.

WRITER Cynthia Cidre

Cynthia Cidre receives the 2011 NCLR ALMA Outstanding Career Achievement Award for her extensive career as a feature film and television writer and producer.

She attended the University of Miami with the intention of becoming a literature professor, but her screenwriting instructor sent a script that she had written for screenwriting class to a contest without Cidre knowing—and the script won. The prize included a stipend from Columbia Pictures that allowed her to write a feature script, which turned into the 1991 MGM feature Fires Within, about Cuban exiles in Little Havana and Florida. Cidre left academia and started her Hollywood career.

She wrote the screenplay for The Mambo Kings, the story of two Cuban musicians who immigrate to New York in the 1950s to succeed in the Latin music scene, and Tara Road, a film about an Irish and American woman who swap houses.

Moving to television, Cidre created and served as executive producer on Cane, which starred Jimmy Smits—an ALMA Award winner—and became the first Latino drama on broadcast television. Cane follows a Cuban American family and its successful Florida-based rum and sugar cane business. Cidre, who was born in Cuba and lived there for part of her childhood, cites her late father, a sugar chemist in Cuba, as inspiration for the show. Navigating the tricky task of appealing to the original audience while updating the show for a new generation, Cidre is at work on her latest project, Dallas, which revives the classic soap opera for TNT in the summer of 2012. Latino characters will be more prominent than in the original—one way in which the show will reflect the demographics of Texas, and an example of the changes that a Latina writer brings to a project such as this. To further reflect the real Dallas, the show will actually be filmed in its namesake Texas city.

Much of Cidre’s work draws on her experience growing up in Miami. Cidre was in fourth grade when her parents emigrated to the U.S. in 1967 on board one of the “freedom flights” for political refugees fleeing Fidel Castro’s communist regime. To support his family when they first came to the United States, Cidre’s father first worked at 7-Eleven, and then found a lab technician job at the University of Miami, allowing Cidre to attend college with a tuition remission.

Her creativity gives voice to our favorite stories, and her own life embodies a Hollywood classic—that of the American Dream. We are honored to present her with the 2011 NCLR ALMA Outstanding Career Achievement Award.

DIRECTOR Gregory Nava

OUTSTANDING CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Screenwriter, director, and producer Gregory Nava receives 2011 NCLR ALMA Outstanding Career Achievement Award for his groundbreaking film and television career, which shows that the universality of the human experience can be told through a Latino story.

Gregory Nava became an internationally renowned filmmaker with his 1983 film El Norte. Co-written with Anna Thomas, El Norte was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Critic Roger Ebert called El Norte—which deals with the plight of people from Guatemala who flee ethnic and political persecution to work without papers in the United States—“The Grapes of Wrath of our time.” In 1996, El Norte was named an “American Classic” and designated for special preservation by the Library of Congress.

In 1995, Nava continued his string of groundbreaking Latino films, directing and co-writing My Family, which was a financial and critical success. The film tells the saga of an American family with its roots deep in Mexico. In 1996, Nava went on to write and direct the feature film Selena, based on the life of the slain Tejano superstar and the definitive breakout role for ALMA Award winner Jennifer Lopez. Nava co-wrote the screenplay for the Academy Award nominated film Frida and most recently wrote and directed Bordertown, again starring Jennifer Lopez. Bordertown won the “Artist for Amnesty” Award from Amnesty International and was nominated for the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

For television, he was the writer, director, and Executive Producer of the Emmy- and Golden Globe–nominated PBS series American Family, notable as it was the first drama series ever to air on broadcast television featuring a Latino cast. Starring Academy Award® nominee and ALMA Award winner Edward James Olmos, as well as Constance Marie, Esai Morales, Sonia Braga, and Raquel Welch, American Family follows three generations of a Mexican American family, from their immigration to the United States during the Mexican Revolution to the younger generation’s involvement in the Iraq war. The show depicts the sacrifices and triumphs that every family makes to achieve the American dream, told though the lens of the Latino experience.

“Basically I think that the human experience is universal,” Nava says. “And as a filmmaker that’s what I’ve always put in the front seat…the universality of the human experience. I’m just trying to tell stories.”

In addition to his ALMA Awards for Outstanding Latino Director of a Feature Film for Selena and Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Nava has been nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and a Writer’s Guild Award. El

Norte is on the National Registry of “culturally significant” films at the Library of Congress. His films have been selected for and honored at many film festivals including Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, Telluride, San Sebastian,

Edinburgh, Chicago, Miami, and Montreal. He has won five “Imagen” Awards: the Hispanic Heritage Award for the Arts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; The National Hispanic Heritage Foundation “Raul Julia Award” for Excellence; the Latino Spirit Award from the State of California; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the “Imagen” Foundation.

Nava is currently developing an epic miniseries at HBO based on Victor Villasenor’s book Rain of Gold. He is also developing a feature about the current crisis on the U.S.-Mexican border called “Gates of Eden.”

For highlighting the universality of the Latino experience by “just telling stories,” Gregory Nava shows us all that the Latino story is an American story. We are honored to present him with the 2011 NCLR ALMA Outstanding Career Achievement Award.

The Harvest

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Harvest, a documentary tracing the lives of migrant children and their families as they travel across the nation to pick fruits and vegetables in our country’s agriculture fields, is recognized with the 2011 NCLR ALMA Special Achievement Award for its attention to the plight of an estimated 500,000 child farmworkers in America.

The film was produced by Shine Global, a nonprofit film company dedicated to transforming children’s lives through film, in association with Globalvision, Inc., Romano Film and Photography, and UnbeliEVAble Entertainment. It was directed by U. Roberto Romano and produced by U. Roberto Romano and Rory O’Connor, with Eva Longoria serving as executive producer.

Children working in agriculture face a harsh reality. An estimated 400,000 children work up to 14 hours a day, seven days a week, which leaves them no time to attend school; the average farmworker family earns

less than $17,500 a year; there is no guaranteed minimum wage or overtime; and early and persistent exposure to pesticides can pose serious health risks. The film offers an intimate look into the lives of children who work in the fields to help support their families. One of the film’s young subjects shares her experience in this way: “Every day when I look at the sun, I would say, ‘is this going to be my entire life?’” The film highlights a long history of dismantling social programs and the exclusion for many from basic rights—allowing these working conditions to continue unchanged since the enactment of the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938.

“I am proud to bring a light to the poor standards in agriculture in this country,” says Longoria. “These children, who feed the most well-fed nation in the world, often go to bed hungry. It is because of this labor force that the United States is the largest food exporter in the world.”

The film encourages all of us to become literate in the issues that face our community. By doing so, says Longoria, we can create an “intellectual, economical, and socially responsible response…Then all of a sudden, people listen.”

2011 ADELANTE ALMA AWARD

In 2001, the NCLR Escalera Program: Taking Steps to Success, was created in collaboration with and

through the support of the PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo, Inc. to promote economic mobility for

Latino youth by increasing educational attainment, career planning, and access to information about

advanced careers. AltaMed Health Services Corporation served as the launching pad for the program.

To date, 92% of students who have enrolled in the Escalera Program have successfully completed

the program and graduated from high school, and 89% of Escalera Program graduates have chosen

a path to higher economic mobility by enrolling in postsecondary education. Since the Program’s

inception, NCLR and its Affiliates have leveraged over $3 million to provide expanded services to

program participants and reach more youth.
